Spider veins are medically known as agio ectasias or varicose veins. These are the tiny veins that originate close to the skin’s surface. They look like spider webs or branches of a tree and are commonly red, purple or blue in color. Most frequently, spider veins are found on the limbs (thighs, back of the calves, insides of the legs, ankles). This happens because of the high pressure veins in the lower extremities of one’s body. Spider veins can sometimes also develop in other parts of the body, for example, the face. The factors contributing to the development of spider veins may include obesity, hormonal changes in women such as during pregnancy, puberty, and menopause. They are also more likely to develop when taking contraceptive pills, a family history of blood circulation problems or blood clots, and continuous standing which is sometimes associated with certain professions.
